The Council of Churches is proudly joining with Habitat for Humanity in building a home for a local family. Members of local churches will work together on this service project; sawing; hammering; painting and building as they bond together in
doing God’s work.

This “faith build” home will be located at 198 Clinton Street in Cortland. Jesus calls us to work together and to share our resources so that everyone has what they need to live abundently. This opportunity to assist someone is a “hand-up” that will benefit all who work together toward the goal.

You can qualify as a Habitat for Humanity partner family if you…
• Have a need for adequate shelter: If your current housing is over-crowded, run down, un-affordable or otherwise inadequate.
• Have the ability to pay for a home: Habitat offer very low interest mortgages to families wo may have difficulty qualifying for a traditional mortgage with a bank.
• Are willing to partner with us: Habitat families must truly want to be homeowners and contribute “sweat equity” (hands on involvement) on Habitat homes.
• Currently live in Tompkins or Cortland County and have lived in either county for at least one year.

Ground breaking for the Cortland build was held on May 1st, 2011. Members of The Council of Churches, representatives from Habitat for Humanity and members of local churches gathered to say blessings, turn over a few shovelfuls of soil, join in song and celebrate an new partnership.

Updates: September 28th

We’ve been making some incredible headway, thanks largely to our volunteers and friends; and our efforts have definitely been rewarded.  We are happy to share with you all, a blog post straight from the White House about our Habitat House and the 9/11 Commemorative Weekend Blitz build.  Click here to read our exciting national recognition and please share!

The Cortland County Council of Churches provides a Protestant Campus Minister to SUNY Cortland students, faculty, and staff.

The Rev. Vicki Johnson is our Protestant Campus Minister. As such, she is the pastor and spiritual advisor for students, staff, and faculty of mainline Protestant denominations (i.e. Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, UMC, UCC, etc.). She is also concerned about those who do not claim a specific faith tradition, but who seek meaning in life.

“You are not alone! I’m available to talk whenever you want to discuss life or faith – or you just want someone to listen to you. I’ll be around campus, and I have an office in the Interfaith Center. These are important years in your life. You are defining who you are on many levels. What do you believe? What is most important to you? Wednesday Worship
begins at 12:15 each Wednesday
This 30-minute service changes in format, but always includes time for prayer on behalf of the campus community.  

Meditation Monday
begins at 12:00 noon each Monday
Enjoy silent meditation at the Interfaith Center.  A candle will be lit at noon and extinguished at 1.  Come when you can.  Leave when you must.

Stuff That Matters
Thursdays beginning at 4:30
We have a free meal for students who want to talk about stuff that matters to them, even while cooking, eating, and cleaning up.  Cooking begins at 4:30, and clean-up is accomplished by 6:30. Come and join the conversation!

‘Move In’ Day
Council volunteers provide assistance to students as they arrive on campus at the beginning of the fall semester and distribute information about religious activities and local churches in the community.

Ministry Munchies
This service, which doubles as a fundraiser for the Council, offers parents the opportunity to order a hand-packed “care package” of goodies for their son or daughter that is delivered during study period at the end of each semester.
